The Privilege We Don’t Talk About

We hear about gender privilege, we hear about racial privilege, but the role that class plays is often overlooked.

I’m crouched behind a dumpster at my high school in Dover, New Hampshire in 2009. The snowflakes float down around me, landing on my arms that are hugging my knees close to my chest. The harsh light from the street lights casts a shadow over me, keeping me hidden behind the cold metal bin. I’m silent. And I’m covered in sweat—for two reasons. The first is that I just spent two hours at color guard practice. The second is that I’m nervous, and I’ve been crouched in this position for fifteen minutes.
